Volunteer opportunities

If you are interested in making a difference, join our volunteer team at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills.

Our volunteers have a great and lasting impact on our patients. Volunteers range in age from 16 to seniors and all share a generosity of spirit and a dedication to giving.

We hope that you will join us and reap the many rewards of volunteering. By giving a minimum of six hours of your time per week, and a minimum of 100 hours overall, you can see how volunteering gives a true sense of fulfillment.

Volunteer requirements

This is an opportunity to use your talents and skills for a meaningful experience that gives you valuable exposure to the health care industry.

Requirements:

  • The minimum age to volunteer at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills?is 16.
  • Applicants must be interviewed. If accepted, there is a six-month probationary period.
  • Junior volunteers (ages 16-18) must also submit working papers and a letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor or teacher.
  • Volunteers must meet the standards of patient- and family-centered care: professional, courteous, compassionate and respectful.
  • Applicants must attend a mandatory volunteer orientation and receive medical clearance, and those 18 and older must complete and clear a background screening before they can begin their assignment.
  • There is a 100-hour commitment per calendar year.

  • Dietary internship

    The Dietetic Culinary Exploration Program is a four-week unpaid program that introduces health care nutrition services. This internship will highlight entry level positions, clinical roles, and leadership roles as you navigate the right fit for your future career path.

    Requirements: Applicants must be?at least 18 years old. All program participants must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and the flu before they can begin. Documentation of COVID-19 vaccination must be provided.

    To apply, please complete our regular volunteer application plus:

    • An essay between 400 and 500 words describing why you are interested in participating in this program and what you hope to take away from it.
    • A letter of academic reference, which should be printed on official school letterhead

  • Emergency room geriatric companion

    Our emergency department (ED) has received Level 3 Geriatric Accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians. This accreditation recognizes quality, well-coordinated care for geriatric patients (age 65 and older). And because more than 25% of our ED patients are over the age of 65, A designated volunteer program for these patients is crucial. It enhances care by providing support and companionship during a vulnerable, potentially challenging time in geriatric patients lives.

  • Pet therapy

    Northwell Health, in collaboration with Pet Partners, will arrange for volunteers and therapy pets to visit patients who are admitted to the hospital.
