Lenox Hill Hospital offers a variety of volunteer experiences for compassionate, supportive volunteers.

Volunteering

At the Manhattan campus, which includes Lenox Hill Hospital, Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, our volunteers play a vital role in enhancing the patient experience. By offering their unique skills, compassion and dedication, volunteers provide comfort, support and companionship to those in need, while gaining valuable insight into the health care industry.

  • Why volunteer with us?

    Volunteering offers a rewarding opportunity to make a lasting impact. It s more than just giving back it s about connecting with others, creating meaningful moments and becoming part of a team that is committed to patient-centered care. Volunteers have the chance to help improve lives, build professional experience and contribute to a culture of empathy, respect and connection within our hospital.

  • What are volunteer requirements?

    To ensure we provide the best care possible, we seek volunteers who are committed to making a difference in the lives of our patients. The onboarding process takes about 6-8 weeks.

    Requirements:

    • The minimum age to volunteer is 16 years old at any of the Manhattan locations.
    • All applicants must complete an interview process. If accepted, there will be a six-month probationary period.
    • Junior volunteers (ages 16-17) must submit working papers and complete a parental consent form.
    • Volunteers must uphold the highest standards of professionalism, courtesy, compassion and respect for patient- and family-centered care.
    • Mandatory volunteer orientation and medical clearance are required.
    • Volunteers aged 18 and older must complete and pass a background screening before beginning their assignment.
    • A commitment of 100 hours per calendar year is required.

  • Appliication deadlines

    Our volunteer application deadlines are set annually. Applications received after these dates will be considered for the next session.

    • Spring session: March 1
    • Summer session: June 1
    • Fall session: September 1
    • Winter session: December 1

  • Volunteer opportunities

    Volunteers are essential members of the team at the Manhattan campus. By providing comfort and cheer, they create a welcoming environment for both patients and staff. We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities that can be tailored to your experience, interests and schedule.     Health Care Immersion summer volunteer program

    The Health Care Immersion summer program provides high school students with the opportunity to work in non-clinical roles throughout the hospital. Students are expected to volunteer at least 100 hours during the month of July, with a minimum of four days per week (Monday through Thursday) from 9am to 3pm. This program accepts 10 high school students, providing extensive exposure to hospital operations and patient care.

    Eligibility & requirements:

    • Applicants accepted into this program cannot go on vacation during this time.
    • Applicants must have an interest in health care and be available for the entire duration of the program.
    • Ideal candidates are highly motivated, mature and have prior volunteer experience.
    • We are no longer accepting applications for the 2025 Health Care Immersion summer volunteer program. The application deadline was January 31, 2025.

    Auxiliary

    For more than 160 years, the Auxiliary of Lenox Hill Hospital has been committed to supporting the hospital, its patients and staff, and the community. The many programs supported by the Auxiliaryboth through fundraising and hands-on participationhelp create positive patient, staff and visitor experiences.

    Auxiliary programs

    The Auxiliary consists of volunteers from a wide variety of professional and community-oriented backgrounds who believe in and are committed to the work of the hospital.

    Programs supported by the Auxiliary include:

    • Continuing education for nurses and staff
    • Medical research projects
    • Nursing recognition awards
    • Enhanced technology and equipment for patient care
    • Summer program for high school students
    • Community events

    These programs encompass all three of Northwell Healths Manhattan campuses: Lenox Hill Hospital, Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital and Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital.

  • What we do

    The Auxiliary:

    • Attends monthly meetings featuring presentations from hospital leadership and speakers from various hospital departments, with updates on medical advances, accomplishments, and hospital and community outreach programs.
    • Works on committees supporting:
      • Nursing recognition and continuing education
      • Employee merit scholarships
      • Summer high school student programs
      • Annual fundraising benefit
      • Infant CPR program
      • Participates in twice-yearly outings to cultural destinations in the New York metropolitan area

  • Membership

    The Nominating Committee meets with prospective members to learn about their interests and to provide further information about the Auxiliary.

    Requirements for active Auxiliary members include:

    • Attend 70% of monthly meetings, held the second Tuesday of each month
    • Pay dues of $250 annually
    • Actively participate in at least one Auxiliary program or committee
    • Support Auxiliary fundraising initiatives

  • Short-Term Observer Program

    We no longer accept informal shadowing requests for high school, college, or medical students, or team member relatives and friends. However, if you are interested in observing, you must first secure a sponsoring physician. The sponsoring physician and/or Observer will need to contact the Volunteer Experience office at manhattancampusvolunteers@northwell.edu to start the process.

    Observer Program Details:

    • You may observe up to 60 hours within a 3-month period.
    • Once approved, you will receive the necessary paperwork to complete the onboarding process.
    • Onboarding takes a minimum of 6 or more weeks.
